Privacy
ASSPIN holds information that, in the wrong hands, can be used against its members — immigration status, employment disputes, accounts of discrimination. Privacy here is a product requirement, not a compliance page.
Your profile is closed by default
Every profile field carries its own visibility, and anything you have not explicitly published is private or visible only to your chapter. Your country of citizenship is private by default. A field you have hidden is left out of the response entirely rather than sent as empty, so nobody can distinguish a field you left blank from one you chose to withhold.
Sensitive data is zoned
ASSPIN separates data into zones and enforces the separation in code rather than by policy. The practical consequences:
- Your account of what happened is separate from everything needed to route your case. A chapter coordinator can assign your case to the right kind of lawyer without reading it.
- Your documents are encrypted before they leave ASSPIN, with a key that is not the one protecting your session. Reading one as a staff member requires a separate permission, a written justification, and a record written before the document is opened.
- Every sensitive read is logged — including successful ones. You can see your own documents’ access history.
What ASSPIN does not do
- ASSPIN does not sell member information, to anyone, at any price.
- ASSPIN does not give institutional partners access to individual member records, even when they pay for the membership.
- ASSPIN emails never describe your case. They say something is waiting and give a link.
- ASSPIN does not store your IP address in plain form. It is hashed with a secret so a database leak cannot re-derive it.
- ASSPIN does not retain what you type into the Navigator. It records the category of the question, not the question.
Research
ASSPIN publishes research on international mobility, economic barriers and discrimination. It uses aggregated, de-identified data and only from members who have consented — and that consent is revocable from your account at any time, without affecting anything else about your membership.
Your rights
You can see what you have consented to, change any field’s visibility, withdraw consent, export your information, and ask for your account to be closed. Consent records are versioned, so you can see what you agreed to and when.
One thing ASSPIN must say plainly
Storing a document with ASSPIN does not make it legally privileged. If privilege matters to your situation, speak to a licensed lawyer before sharing anything — including with ASSPIN.
